Protecting smiles of young athletes with mouth guards

It is essential to protect the smiles of children who engage in sports or other activities such as skateboarding. These sports activities are the cause of the most common injuries received by young athletes.

Mouth guards help protect teeth and gums from injury. In keeping with recommendations of the American Dental Association, your dentist will recommend a customized mouth guard if your child is an athlete participating in sports such as soccer, basketball, volleyball, hockey, racquetball, rugby, football, boxing or participates in gymnastics, lacrosse, martial arts, track and field, skateboarding, skiing, snowboarding, skydiving, surfing, water polo, weightlifting or wrestling.

Types of mouth guards

There are three types of mouth guards, and choosing the right mouth guard is essential.

  • the pre-made mouth guard
  • the “boil-and-bite” fitted mouth guard
  • the custom-made mouth guard.

It is essential to select a tear-resistant and comfortable mouth guard that will fit perfectly to your child’s mouth so that it does not hamper him breathing correctly and is easy to clean. If your child is wearing braces or a retainer, he must wear a customized mouth guard. Your dentist will work with you to choose the right mouth guard and guide your child on wearing the mouth guard well.

Taking care of your child’s mouth guard

Taking good care and maintaining mouth guard well is relatively easy and not a time-consuming task. Below are a few guidelines to be followed that will ensure your child’s mouth guard is kept clean and will work properly.

  • Use a toothbrush and toothpaste to scrub the mouth guard gently after each use.
  • Use a protective case to store the mouth guard.
  • Please do not leave the mouth guard in hot water or the sun as it may melt or become deformed.
  • It is essential that you replace the mouth guard at the start of each new sports season, or if you notice that it has become worn and does not fit properly.
  • If your child is wearing braces, speak to your dentist to design a customized mouth guard that will protect both his teeth and his braces.
  • Do not cut off pieces or chew on your mouth guard.
  • It is essential to bring the mouth guard to each dental checkup to enable your dentist to ensure it fits well and is in good shape!
