Tooth decay is the leading cause of tooth loss among children. It is also a common childhood condition, more prevalent than hay fever or asthma. As specialists in pediatric dentistry, we at Mona Dental for Kids in Spring, Texas, are adept at accurately and promptly diagnosing and resolving these and other childhood oral conditions. Dental sealants are one of the most helpful and hassle-free ways we have to protect children’s oral health.
The molars and premolars at the back of the mouth are more prone to developing decay than other teeth. In fact, nine out of every ten cavities will occur in the back teeth. There are more than a few reasons for this. First, the chewing surfaces of the molars are unevenly pitted and grooved. These fissures trap food particles, bacteria, and plaque–the substances responsible for the onset of destructive and progressive tooth decay. Additionally, these teeth are hard to clean because they are hard to reach. Without treatment, decay can work its way through the tooth, starting with the protective enamel. Eventually, holes or cavities can form on the surfaces of the teeth.
Sealants are a great complement to good at-home oral hygiene and regular professional care at our office. Dr. Mona paints the sealant, or protective coating, on the surfaces of clean, dry, and conditioned teeth. Once applied, she hardens this clear resin material with a special light. Precise refinements are made to ensure that the sealant doesn’t interfere with your child’s “bite” or how the upper and lower teeth come in contact with each other.
Sealants do not require special care. They can effectively keep out or “seal out” food particles and other nasties for many years, as long as your child does not place excessive wear and tear on the material. For example, if children brux or grind their teeth, we will discuss oral appliances and other therapies to protect the natural tooth and sealant materials. For added peace of mind, we assure you that sealants remain in excellent condition during your child’s routine dental check-up. We can quickly and easily repair or replace the sealant–just as effortlessly as we applied the sealant in the first place!
Sealants are an affordable, smart investment and alternative to invasive, costly, and time-consuming restorative dental treatments. We keep your child’s smile healthy and looking fantastic!
