At Mona Dental for Kids, we partner with pediatric patients and parents from across the Spring, Texas, area to minimize the risks of developing destructive conditions like cavities and tooth decay. Dr. Mona Houshiar and our team do this with guidance on good brushing and flossing techniques and in-house professional preventative services, like dental sealants for hard-to-reach and highly vulnerable back teeth. But it is not just decay-prone back teeth that are susceptible to damage.
Dental crowns and other restorations or dental work may also be necessary to treat decayed or damaged front teeth. Plus, it is not unusual for children to sustain damage, injuries, or trauma to these prominent front teeth. A tooth may become cracked or even dislodged — pushed sideways or out of its proper, healthy position — as the result of falls, play, sports, and accidents.
While we can also take steps to minimize some of these potential injuries and forms of damage (like protective sports or mouth guards), we cannot anticipate each and every situation that might lead to dental trauma requiring prompt treatment. Here again, restorations like crowns may be on the horizon if the damage is severe enough and if the natural tooth can still be preserved.
Crowns may be appropriate to treat more extensive damage or decay. For instance, not all cavities can be treated adequately with a filling. If it takes a large filling to treat a big cavity, then moving forward with a crown might be recommended. The crown provides sufficient strength and structure to a tooth that has lost more of its natural tissue. By replacing the entire white portion of the teeth seen above the gumline, we help to support the sustained strength of a tooth that is weak from breakage or the effects of progressive decay and traumatic injuries.
Additionally, since the front teeth or incisors and canines are so visible in the smile, we take great care to consider these crowns’ aesthetics. So, while crowns are fabricated from various dental materials, ceramics like porcelain may be the most well-suited to situations where the front teeth are compromised. Porcelain can be perfectly color-matched to blend in with the surrounding tooth structure and the other teeth in the smile. Plus, this ceramic is lauded for its ability to reflect light and otherwise replicate the properties of tooth enamel. So, it looks particularly natural. No one should know that your child has a lab-made dental crown! It should look, feel, and hold up like the “real deal.” In fact, today’s dental ceramics are also incredibly strong. They are not just nice to look at.
