Cavities are one of the most common chronic conditions among children in the United States. By age 12, the CDC reports that one in five kids will have at least one decayed tooth.
Cavities or tooth decay are preventable. At Mona Dental for Kids, we live up to our name by exclusively treating pediatric patients. Led by Dr. Mona Houshiar, our team in Spring, Texas, is optimally equipped to treat children safely and effectively. One of the easiest and safest ways to keep dental decay at bay is with sealants.
Dental sealants applied by Dr. Houshiar also have the added perk of being very affordable. As they fall under the category of “preventive service,” sealants generally cost way less than fillings and other restorative treatments to correct cavities and more extensive decay. They are also often 100% covered by most dental insurance plans.
It may be recommended to place sealants as soon as a child’s permanent back teeth erupt through the gums. Cavities tend to develop in the premolars and molars toward the back of our mouths. This is due to several factors, including that it can be hard for patients to brush and floss those teeth properly.
Also, these teeth are uniquely designed with grooves and pits which can easily trap food particles. This provides a good breeding ground for bacteria and the build-up of destructive plaque responsible for enamel erosion, cavities, and other forms of tooth decay.
The first molar may appear around the age of six. The second molar is the last tooth of its kind (excluding wisdom teeth) to erupt, typically breaking through the gums at around the age of 12. Within that six-year time span, the first or second premolars or bicuspids should also be visible. By applying a thin, tooth-colored sealant material to these teeth, Dr. Houshiar keeps out all the bad stuff that can wreak havoc on your child’s teeth.
These sealants are made from a safe resin material painted on as a liquid and hardened by our dentist with a special curing light. Since the sealant blends in with your child’s other teeth and the rest of the tooth structure, all others can see are their healthy teeth! Dr. Houshiar also ensures the sealants are holding up well during check-ups.
