Sometimes, your child’s teeth need a little “help” through dental restorations like crowns. Getting dental crowns on vulnerable teeth primarily involves shaping and applying biocompatible (tissue-friendly) and highly aesthetic materials. Your child’s tooth may be vulnerable to further damage and threatened by a range of conditions.
Cracks or fractures may result from acute trauma, such as blows to the face during sports or from weakened tooth structure. Teeth may be weakened by conditions like enamel erosion and bruxism (chronic teeth grinding). Mona Dental for Kids in Spring, Texas, only treats children. Hence, we partner with pediatric patients and their parents to proactively prevent and resolve the effects of fractures and cracks. We can discuss oral appliances like sports mouthguards and nightguards (for bruxism) as needed. We’ll also advise on fluoride supplements and other professional services like dental sealants to keep the tooth’s natural defenses – its protective enamel – strong.
If existing damage cannot be resolved with these interventions, Dr. Mona Houshiar may recommend restorative treatment to build up the tooth and aid in preserving it. Sometimes, a dental filling is not sufficient to protect the tooth. In these cases, Dr. Houshiar may suggest restorations that provide greater “coverage” for the vulnerable tooth. These restorations include dental crowns.
Pediatric crowns are a convenient and ready-made solution for the restoration of deciduous teeth. They come in sets with different sizes and shapes made explicitly for primary teeth. Different types of crowns are available to provide full coverage, such as pre-veneered stainless steel, aluminum, polymer, and zirconia. These crowns are designed to blend with the natural color of the teeth. Before the prefabricated crown is placed over the tooth, the natural tooth must be “prepared” by removing any damaged tissue that is beyond repair. Once the crown is securely placed over the tooth, it can hold together any broken and weakened parts and restore its damaged structure. With proper care at home and regular professional care at our office, no further treatment should be necessary.
