Pleasant, comfortable dental visits early in life are the foundation for good oral health and a beautiful smile well into adulthood. Mona Dental for Kids supports a “non-scary” experience with sedation dentistry, specifically, a relaxing service called “oral conscious sedation.” This is just medical terminology for when Dr. Mona Houshiar prescribes medication to calm our pediatric patients so they are happy, relaxed, and safe. The medication is taken in pill form by mouth. It is a very safe and predictable way to make visits at our Spring, Texas office as welcoming and non-intimidating as possible for both the child and parent alike.
The fear of the unknown is often to blame for dental apprehension. We strive to be transparent and provide as much clear information as possible about what to expect during visits and with services, including the following four steps to a stress-free experience with sedation.
Contact our office so we can get you on our schedule. Dr. Houshiar will discuss your concerns and your child’s needs during your visit. She also goes over your child’s medical history. She uses these and other factors to determine the best approach, including the type of sedative method that may be most suitable for your child, as well as the type and dosage of medication to be prescribed. Oral conscious sedation is generally best for children with mild to moderate anxiety. It is also helpful if your child needs complex dental work or requires a long visit. Lastly, Dr. Houshiar may prescribe a pill as a nice “helper” for children with special needs, such as physical/behavioral/developmental conditions that present challenges to them getting even the most basic services essential to protect their smiles.
You will be provided with specific instructions. Some of these instructions may include adjustments to herbal supplements or other medications your child may take on the day of treatment. These adjustments help to ensure the safest experience. If your child suddenly comes down with a fever, congestion, cough, or ear infection, contact us to reschedule the appointment. You must restrict your child’s intake of food and liquids as directed by Dr. Houshiar. This is an essential step because fasting minimizes the risk of aspiration (when stomach contents make their way into the lungs). You will also need to make sure your child takes their pill at the designated time prior to arriving at our office.
Your child may appear drowsy or sleepy. This is simply the effect of the sedative taking hold. These effects are proof that the sedative is working to calm your child’s fears and anxieties. Sedatives can also be used to prevent fidgety children from moving around during treatment, which may lead to injury. Overall, with your child completely relaxed, our team can quickly and safely perform exams, cleanings, and other necessary treatments or services.
Just as we provided instructions for care prior to your child’s appointment, we will also provide detailed and tailored instructions on what to monitor for and what to do following the appointment. You will be free to go once the effects from the sedative are minimal; however, your child may still be drowsy. Since lingering drowsiness and a lack of coordination can continue for the rest of the day, limit your child’s activities to quiet, restful time monitored by a parent or responsible adult. Activities like riding a bike or playing on gym equipment are not recommended due to the increased risk of injury. Don’t rush the process. Incorporate small sips of clear liquids and easy-to-digest foods (like applesauce and jello) at first to minimize nausea and keep your child hydrated.
