Dentists make every effort to preserve teeth. Measures to “save” badly decayed or severely infected teeth are generally preferred over dental extractions or the removal of the affected tooth. Furthermore, as a pediatric dentist, Dr. Mona Houshiar appreciates that baby teeth should be preserved whenever possible. Temporary baby teeth serve important functions, including supporting the healthy development of permanent teeth.
Furthermore, as a provider of pediatric dentistry services only, Mona Dental for Kids in Spring, Texas, has the experience and focused skills to comfortably treat children with pulp therapy.
Pulpectomy. Pulpotomy. Nerve treatment. Root canal therapy. Pulp therapy goes by many different names. But all of these collectively refer to removing the damage that develops inside a tooth (the “pulp”). The insides of the tooth are also cleaned.
For this reason, dentists sometimes refer to pulp therapy as a “deep cleaning” for the inside of the tooth. The treated tooth is then sealed off so it can heal. After the tooth has healed, a restoration is placed to protect it and prevent re-infection optimally.
As a skilled and kind pediatric dentist, Dr. Houshiar is proactive. She regularly monitors for problems with both the primary and secondary teeth. In turn, she can promptly recommend interventions to avoid damage that threatens the tooth’s health and neighboring teeth and oral tissues. Pulp therapy has a very high rate of successful treatment; however, we can discuss alternatives such as space maintainers to support healthy oral development among those patients whose baby teeth cannot be preserved.
For appropriate patients, in the short term, pulp treatment resolves any toothaches, swelling, and other symptoms that may be present. By removing the nerves at the center of the tooth, your child does not feel the sensation of pain. Over the longer term, this approach helps to ensure healthy development during these pivotal formative years.
If your child winces when drinking or eating cold, sweet, or hot beverages and foods, it is essential to contact us right away. The same goes for other symptoms, such as complaints about off-and-on pain or a persistent toothache. These could be signs of severe trauma to the pulp.
We can establish a healthy routine that avoids the damage that leads to toothaches, painful swelling, and the need for treatments. Our office in Spring, TX, can be reached at (832) 662-3008.
