Your child’s oral health is vital at every stage in infancy and childhood. The health of the teeth, gums, and mouth plays a pivotal role in essential functions, from how children eat to how they speak. A healthy mouth also supports healthy development. Children whose mouths are free of painful oral disease are less likely to miss school. Academic performance is supported. Healthy mouths also promote attractive smiles, supporting good social development and a healthy self-image.
Mona Dental for Kids is pleased to answer some of your common questions about regular teeth cleaning at our office in Spring, Texas. We also provide other ways to keep your child smiling confidently and comfortably.
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry advises that kids, at minimum, visit their dental office once every six months. We also adhere to AAPD guidelines that recommend those visits start at a very young age, no later than your child’s first birthday (or as soon as you see the first tooth – whichever milestone comes first).
There are two key parts: First, no routine visit or “check-up” would be complete without a dental cleaning by one of our hygienists. They remove bacteria, lingering food debris, and other “bad stuff” from the teeth and at the gumline. Our team has special skills and tools to clean teeth and other mouth areas effectively. Some substances, such as hardened plaque, are too stubborn to be removed with a regular toothbrush. Second, Dr. Mona Houshiar will peek inside your child’s mouth to check for potential problems with the teeth, gums, and other structures and tissues. Dr. Mona strives to identify and intervene with developmental challenges and other issues early when they are either asymptomatic or associated with subtle symptoms that might otherwise be ignored.
If your child is at least a year old, scheduling their first dental visit by their first birthday is essential. We want to ensure that your child’s mouth and jaw develop properly. Even if your child has little to no teeth, Dr. Mona and our team can also go over ways to promote good oral health for developing baby teeth by demonstrating, for instance, how to safely and adequately clean the gums. And, yes, baby teeth are temporary, but they are also important! Not only do they help guide the permanent or secondary teeth into the right “alignment,” but the primary teeth can also be a significant source of pain and stress when damaged. Your child deserves the best possible start and a smile that they are proud to show off and that functions in a way that supports optimal health, function, and well-being.
Yes! Fluoride is a powerful (and safe) way to protect the “armor” that covers your child’s teeth – their enamel. We may determine that your child could benefit from fluoride supplementation. Dr. Mona is proud to offer a range of methods to ensure this natural mineral is applied safely, painlessly, and effectively. She also provides several other professional preventative “helpers,” such as dental sealants. As your child grows, sealants may be advised to “seal out” food, bacteria, and plaque in the grooves and pits of the back teeth. These teeth can decay due to their backmost locations and uneven surfaces.
Let’s embark on or get your child back into a healthy routine. Schedule a check-up today. Our team in Spring, TX, welcomes your call at (832) 662-3008.
