Mona Dental for Kids strives to have your child “ace” each and every dental check-up at our office in Spring, Texas. That means your child’s mouth remains healthy and free of leading threats to the teeth: cavities (tooth decay) and gum disease.
Cavities or holes can form due to plaque. This sticky bacterial film is constantly forming on the teeth. Whenever you or your child consume sugary or starchy foods and beverages, the bacteria in the plaque produces acids. These acids attack and erode the outermost protective covering of the tooth – the enamel.
This process of enamel erosion and tooth decay continues without appropriate treatment or interventions. As the enamel erodes or deteriorates, a small hole or cavity forms. The treatment recommended for cavities depends on the extent of the damage to the tooth. Moreover, Dr. Mona Houshiar works with you and your child to prevent such damage from occurring in the first place.
To ideally protect the teeth from cavities, Dr. Houshiar recommends:
We can advise on good oral care products and techniques to ensure your child’s teeth and gums remain healthy. These recommendations may also be based on the age of the child. Keep in mind that it is never too early to instill good habits. Even baby teeth are important because they serve as placeholders for permanent teeth. Gum health is also vital to support the developing teeth.
In some cases, professional preventatives like fluoride can also stop existing decay from progressing. However, larger cavities must be treated with restorative dentistry. The “go-to” is the dental filling. Dr. Houshiar uses tooth-colored, metal-free composite resin to “fill in” the cavity or hole caused by the decay process. Depending on your child’s needs, more extensive dental crowns, nerve treatments, and extractions (with space maintainers) for baby teeth may be necessary.
The sooner that we can intervene and stop decay, the less extensive the treatment that may be necessary to maintain your child’s oral and overall health. In fact, no restorative treatment may be needed at all.
