Oral Sedation

Calming sedative dentistry supports comfort, fights dental fear

Sedation is an integral part of dentistry, as many individuals have dental anxiety and fear. As providers of dental care for children and children only, we at Mona Dental for Kids in Spring, Texas, appreciate our essential role and responsibility in fostering healthy and positive relationships and experiences. Led by Dr. Mona Houshiar, our team knows how to inspire trust and calm. We speak to children in a way that is not scary. Dental sedation complements this approach to care. We can discuss what options are available, including oral sedation, to ensure the utmost comfort and relaxation before, during, and after the dental visit.

Oral sedation: The many benefits

Simply put, this type of sedative dentistry refers to the use of a relaxing oral medication. As an oral medication, the liquid is taken by mouth. Dr. Mona expertly identifies the best medication for your child. She will administer the medication in the office after examining and reviewing your child’s medical health on the day of the operation. We are here to help! So, we encourage you to ask any questions. You must be aware of exactly what to expect at every stage of the process.

Depending on your child’s unique needs, Dr. Mona can also recommend other sedative options. Oral sedation is considered to be a safe and appropriate treatment for pediatric patients with mild to moderate anxiety; however, patients with minimal apprehension may alternatively benefit from nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”). On the other end of the spectrum, those individuals with a severe phobia or undergoing complex or lengthy procedures may be excellent candidates for deeper sedation with an IV (intravenously) or general anesthesia.

Our patients, and their parents and caregivers, appreciate oral sedation for numerous reasons, including:

  • Its method of delivery is simple and easy – just take a liquid
  • Children are fully relaxed, so we can easily and quickly perform procedures
  • Anxious kids don’t have a care in the world and may even doze off; yet, they remain conscious, awake throughout treatment and able to respond to commands
  • Sedative medications make the comfortable visits necessary for your child’s health and well-being a possibility – even the most fearful, fidgety children can benefit
